Hike to The Grandfather Mountain

Our hike to the Grandfather Mountain was an unforgettable experience for myriad reasons. A hike is not just a walk or a climb with friends through a neighborhood amidst nature, it is a mental, physical and an exciting experience all together. Personally, I love to hike very much as it brings me closest to nature. Secondly, it tests my capabilities in terms of endurance to keep going and strength to face the unknown.

Grandfather’s Mountain exposed us to highest wind speed which was breathtaking, pun intended. The trails offered the much needed respite from the winds. There are many trails catering to the levels we are in-Beginner, moderate or an expert. We chose to explore the Black Rock Nature trail, and yes it goes without saying that the trail was rocky and challenging. The invigorating trail was not limited to hike but some rock climbing as well. Although an easy one but a climb is a climb. The trail offers an incredible view of the grandfathers mountain, blue ridge parkway and the Beacon Heights.

While coming back we covered the Grandfather extension trail to view the famous Swinging bridge and also view the patio view of the Mac Rae peak. The signs and instructions were very clear all through the trail. The rocks and creeks bestow a beautiful view every now and then. Although the distance covered was just about 2 miles for both the trails, the steep climb and the steps were kind of exhausting. Grandfathers Mountain is a must visit for all the hikers, nature lovers and outdoor fitness seekers.

P.S. All you need is a good pair of shoes, some snacks and a very important tip would be -do not let the high wind dampen your plan to take the trail. Grandfather’s Mountain can host the region’s most severe winds but the trails are as welcoming as a cave, a warm and safe enclosure from the winds.
